How to Choose an American Mahjong Set: A Buyer's Guide for Beginners

Velora Zodiac American mahjong set tiles laid out

Mahjong sets range from bare-bones to heirloom, and they don't all work for the same game. If you play American mahjong, the kind with a yearly card and Jokers, here's what to check before you buy.

1. Make sure it's an American set

This is the most common mistake. American mahjong needs Jokers, and Chinese, Japanese and many vintage sets don't have them. Look for a set described as American, with at least 8 Jokers and 152 playing tiles. Not sure what that includes? See what comes in an American mahjong set.

2. Check for spares

Tiles get lost under couches and in purses. A set with a few extra Jokers or blank replacement tiles saves you from a ruined set. Our sets come with 160 tiles, so the spares are built in.

3. Look closely at readability

Beautiful tiles are only fun if everyone at the table can read them quickly. Check for:

  • Corner numbers on the suit tiles, so a 6 Bam doesn't get confused with an 8 Bam.
  • Clear contrast between the artwork and the tile face.
  • Distinct Dragons and Flowers that are easy to tell apart at a glance.

If your group includes newer players, or anyone who prefers larger, bolder markings, readability matters more than any other feature.

4. Consider the tile material

Most modern American sets are made of acrylic or melamine. Acrylic tiles feel smooth and substantial, and engraved designs hold their color well. Vintage Bakelite sets are collectible but often older, heavier and harder to replace. For everyday play, a well-made acrylic set is easy to care for. Here's how to clean and care for acrylic tiles.

5. Decide whether you need racks and a case

You'll need four racks with pushers to play. Buying a complete set means everything matches and arrives together. If you already own racks you love, a tiles-only set like Pavora lets you upgrade just the tiles.

A sturdy case matters if you travel to game night. Look for one that closes securely and keeps tiles organized, not loose in a bag.

6. Choose a design you'll enjoy every week

Your set lives on the table for hours at a time, so pick one that makes you happy to set up. A few directions to consider:

  • Soft and romantic: pink florals and hearts, like our Amora set.
  • Bold and celestial: jewel tones and Zodiac motifs, like Velora.
  • Bright and festive: red, white and blue Americana, like Astera.
  • Elegant and artistic: peacock feathers and rich color, like Pavora.

7. Think about who it's for

If it's a gift, a complete set with a case is the easiest choice: it's ready to play the day it arrives. For a player who already has a set, new tiles in a different style or a mahjong mat make a thoughtful upgrade. More ideas in our mahjong gift guide.

Don't forget the card

No set includes the National Mah Jongg League card, because it changes every year. Each player needs their own. Our guide to the league card explains how to read it.
